The Department for Education reported that the overall absence rate in England for the autumn and spring terms of the 2023/24 academic year was 6.9%, slightly better than 7.3% the previous year but still much higher than pre-pandemic levels, which were below 5% (gov.uk). One of the biggest challenges is persistent absence, which means missing 10% or more of school days. Around 19.2% of students fell into this category in 2023/24—a small improvement from 21.2% the year before, but still almost double the pre-pandemic rate of 10.5% (gov.uk).
